North Korea's missile test? Update

kpa

Update: Japan has ordered the missile shield and some destroyers to be deployed.

Reports are starting to intensify about North Korea’s Taepo Dong-2 missile test. I made a posting about this earlier, but there are some other things that came “to light” since then. However, like everything North Korea, there are still more questions than answers.

Since that is not news nor surprising, there are reports of the missile being on the pad and has the stage 3 booster installed. Of course, this has the international community concerned about it, namely Japan running drills, South Korea planning tougher sanctions, the United States calling it a provocative act (along with warships), and so on.

The big question is, what will be on that missile, is it really a communications satellite, a warhead, or some guy wanting to pick up some moon rock samples? It is hard to say, but one thing is for sure, since nobody knows what North Korea is planning to do. With that, preparations are well underway to watch this launch very closely. Does this mean war, or is this overblown? I guess it is better to err on the side of caution, but the bigger issue is looming in the horizon; if in fact this missile launch is not a satellite as feared, what will be the consequences for the action?

North Korea warns if the missile is shot down, that will mean war. I do not know if Kim Jong Il is serious on that threat, but if he is serious, then all eyes will be on North Korea. However, since this is in the future tense, I will not jump to conclusions until the day it does happen. After all, it may be canceled, not work, and many other things. I will keep this post updated as the events unfold.

  • On My Way to Korea has some very good entries on propaganda posters. I have no idea how these posters were collected, but is worth a look. There are translations for the captions as well.

  • An IRC channel has been added if users wish to discuss things. I do not know how this will work, but it is there regardless. I am usually around, so if you want to shoot the breeze or whatever else, feel free to join in. If I am not around, enmand, S6, Redgore or DrCheese are hanging around. I have known these folks for almost ten years, and how time flies. You can join the chat from the link on the navigation bar on top.
