.kp domain: I never thought I would see the day

(Thanks to hapo for the info on this)

The .kp TLD is up and running. There seems to be only one publicly accessible site, and is thinking of accepting registrations soon. What the conditions of registring is unclear, but is interesting all the same. If there are other sites, I do not know.

Will all the pro-DPRK sites go to the new domain? After all, North Korea is not too fond of Japan. If you have not seen it yet, here are some links for you:

Whois information

ICANN statement

Meeting from the board of directors

ANA Report on Delegation of the .KP Top-Level Domain

Korean Computer Center

Naenara

Alright, that should be more than enough. At any rate, I thought this would never happen, and anything is possible after this news. Yes, this may be a little old in the news department, but it is pretty significant as far as the DPRK is concerned.

Songun blog has this video, but before I show you the video, here is the blurb regarding it:

It is a common misconception in the outside world, fed with constant mindless US imperialist anti-DPRK propaganda drivel, that North Koreans do not have computers or even knowledge of the existence of the Internet.
This, of course, is complete nonsense and is disproved by the Dutch documentary “North Korea, A Day In The Life”.
Please do not believe in US imperialist anti-DPRK propaganda but look at the facts.

As an anti-DPRK person, I am sure North Koreans have knowledge of the Internet, and some even accessed it. Phones have been smuggled in along with other media. While the North has been trying to keep it under control according to reports and defectors, once the genie is out of the bottle, it is difficult to put it back in.

Also, the documentary A Day in the Life is an attempt to show what North Korea is like from the government’s perspective like the tours. It seems the family shown is part of the policy elites. That is evident from grandpa with all the medals. But hey, you knew that already.

Propaganda Time, massive irony edition

Kim Jong Il knows fashion. His jumpsuit is something Versace should emulate and envy. Long live the Great General!

He also is very concerned about peoples’ diet. I do not know what a dress or toilet paper has to do with diet, but I am not going to go there:

And yes, you get a double dose today for your re-education.

Let us sing a song about how the Great General loves little kids and sends Grapes Of Love like big candy. It is so tasty!

This was the first propaganda video I ever saw, and it was pretty heartbreaking to see at first because of the reports of kids dying. After a while, it did not really phase me because this is pretty much the norm for the North Korean propaganda machine. There are other videos of interest where the above video came from, so check that out (Some videos may contain content not suitable for everybody, so viewer discretion is advised).

Al-Jazeera Video: Israel’s Syria raid - 16 Sept 07 - Part 1 and Part 2

Inside Story looks at the mysterious Israeli air raid in Syria and the theories as to its purpose - was it a rehearsal for a strike on targets in Iran? Or an attack, as some are claiming, on a joint nuclear venture between North Korea and Syria?

This should supplement the excellent posts by ROK Drop and One free Korea (See this DPRK Forum Blurb)

That’s right, it is that time again, and perhaps you should forget what is said here and visit the paradise that is Pyongyang. Look! They have ice cream, kids sliding down the slippy slides, large living spaces including pianos, libraries, TVs, and of course, the leaders tenderly looking down at the inhabitants.

Oh and you get a double dose because you need to be re-educated from the imperialist lies.

Enjoy:

Wow, look at that house!

Mmmm, ice cream!

Amb. Christopher Hill Keynote on North Korea

A strange concert and a mystery

Since South Korean media is banned in North Korea, I ran into this concert that was held in Pyongyang (so the description says edit: I saw the Kim Il Sung lapel. It’s North Korea alright). So my question is, how was this even arranged? I mean people have been sent to the gulags for humming a South Korean song for Pete’s sake. If anybody has an answer to this mystery, let me know.

Oh one more thing. Look at the audience. They are clearly uncomfortable and are not reacting to the act at all. like everything North Korea, it is so… odd and unreal. Check it out:
